What is a QR menu and what does it give a venue?

A QR code is placed on each table. The guest scans it with their phone camera and the menu opens in the browser — no app to install, no account, no sign-up. The menu is generated from the items the venue currently sells, so taking an item off sale at the register removes it from the menu too. Photos, calories and allergen information are attached to the item itself.

The real gain: menu maintenance

The hidden cost of a printed menu is not the printing but the moment it stops being accurate. When a price changes you either reprint or stick a label over it; a sold-out dish stays on the page and a guest asks for something they cannot have. A QR menu removes both: change the price at the register and the menu changes, close a sold-out item with one tap and it disappears.

The second gain is language. In tourist areas keeping a printed menu per language is both expensive and impossible to keep current. A digital menu opens in the language of the guest’s phone: the same item list, shown in a different language.

QR menu versus ordering at the table

The two get confused. A QR menu only displays: the guest reads it and then calls a waiter. Ordering at the table (self-service) goes one step further — the guest adds items to a cart, confirms, and the order drops straight onto the check and the kitchen display. The first replaces the printed menu; the second replaces taking the order. Each can be switched on or off independently.

Where it does not help

A QR menu does not pay off equally everywhere. Where the menu is short and rarely changes the gain is limited, and where guests struggle with phones a printed menu is still needed. The sensible answer is usually both: a QR code and a short printed menu on the table.
