What is a POS and what does it do in a restaurant?
POS stands for “point of sale”. In practice the word is used for two different things, and most of the confusion starts right there.
One word, two different things
In Türkiye the word POS usually means the card reader the bank supplies. That device does one thing: read the card and pass the payment to the bank. In restaurant technology, POS is the name of the software that runs where the sale happens — the system that takes the order, calculates the bill, sends it to the kitchen and reports on it. The two sit on the same counter but do different jobs.
Why the distinction matters in practice: change the card reader and the POS software stays; change the POS software and the whole operation changes with it. Being clear about which one is being discussed removes half the surprises that show up later in an investment decision.
What POS software takes on in a restaurant
In retail a POS has a relatively simple job: scan a barcode, add up the total, take payment. In a restaurant the sale does not happen in one moment; a table stays open for hours, the order arrives in pieces and the preparation happens in the kitchen. So a restaurant POS has to do more than a retail one.
- Managing tables and checks: opening, adding, splitting, merging, transferring
- Routing the order to the right kitchen or bar station
- Deducting ingredients by recipe and calculating cost
- Taking mixed payments: cash, card, meal card, running account
- Keeping permissions and an audit trail for comps, voids and discounts
- Reporting revenue, item profitability and staff performance
What does a cloud POS mean?
A cloud POS means the software and the data live on central servers rather than on a computer inside the venue. Register, tablet, phone and browser all look at the same record; updates arrive on their own, backups run daily, and if a device dies the data does not die with it. For the fear of losing connection there is an offline mode: transactions queue on the device and sync when the line returns.
